"Mosaicshards bring luck"

Welcome, to my website!
Here I am, doing what I like best:-)

Mosaics, the story:

Brussels:

My first contact to the art of mosaics happened during a week end course in the winter of 2004 here in Brussels that I had enrolled in very spontaneously. I got hooked right away!

Isabelle Charpentier, my teacher still now, (la voilà! ):

is a Wallonian mosaic and jewellery artist who restores Art Nouveau mosaics in Belgium ( there´s plenty of Art Nouveau (a design style mostly during 1890- 1915, just before Art Deco)  mosaic facades, floors and pillars in houses in Brussels and elsewhere.

The reason for this is that Belgium did not get much bombarded during the Second World War. But the Belgians themselves destroyed alot of beautiful houses to build something more modern in the 60´s  and 70´s,  around 5000 houses in Brussels alone were torn down and replaces with ugly highrises or were sacrifices to build the European quater office buildings, where I work now too.

Isabelle is also studying to become a goldsmith.

My first project from that weekend now hangs in my bathroom (pic still missing:-(

I still go to Isabelle´s courses every Monday night after work (it´s great for forgetting about a crappy Monday at work) for inspiration and mostly to  meet great people, Belgians in majority :-)

My working tools:

I mostly work with shards of broken porcelaine, glass and ceramics.
At home in Brussels as well as in Aachen, I´ve collected mountains of broken cups, plates and such in multitudes of colors.

Friends and family who know about my hobby have started giving me stuff that they break. My mom says it doesn´t feel half as bad if she breaks something nowadays, since I can give it "new life" through a mosaic.

If you want to contribute to my "shardmountain", you are welcome to do so!!! You can be sure thta any broken cup, vase or ceramic object can find a good home at my place:-)

Painting, the story:

I have loved painting since I was a small child!

I now take courses at a school in Brussels where you can really relax after work (www.sasasa.be).

This year I´m doing still lifes in watercolours, something I really disliked till now, and want to learn to do well. Last year I did sketching in coal and pencil, it was fun drawing nudes, but really difficult!

Recently, I painted a few things I was asked to do, but mostly I give away my paintings as presents.
This is one of my latest projects which I had a lot of fun doing:

Seating arrangement and paintings in the Krott Family Bakery (2006-7)

Yours,
Kirsti
